Watching rust get blasted off of metal is always satisfying. It must be even more satisfying to do it, particularly when you're using a self-made sandblaster. DIY'er Adam Fleisch figured out how to make one for under six bucks, using an airgun and a soda bottle, and the darn thing actually works:

Well it's $6 plus the air compressor plus a broom to sweep up all the crap that you've just blown over the rest of the shop. The silicosis is free.
Just keep in mind from a health stand point that Glass beads done this way should never be breathed or let into the air. Silica poisoning (silicosis) is serious. Not that you want to be spraying other stuff around and breathing it either. If done safely this is a cool little hack.
Health and safety issues aside, I love this.
I wonder if flipping the orientation of the bottle would increase the effectiveness, the air pressure passing through the bottle should pull up the glass into the air stream right, like fuel in a carburetor?
