How Car Design Works Part 1: Who Designs What
Love these kinds of articles - "how the sausage is made" - informative/funny for more experienced designers, and a course in hard knocks for the recent grads. Could names be added as examples of each level/category of designer, especially at the higher levels? For instance, what was Walter da Silva's role throughout his career.
"Get it wrong, and you get a Fiat Stilo."... Perfect.
I'm curious how certain design elements, ones that are neutral or even detrimental to function, end up being copied across many manufacturers within a few years? It seems there are a number of cliche patterns that end up almost feeling like "standards" and not mere coincidence.
Nice and interesting article.. i think you missed a title in the "Senior Designers" part and some misspelling at the "Conclusions" title. Eager to read part 2! And I'm with Sean about giving some names as examples to locate the roles you mention.
