Once upon a time, a standard assignment for first-year industrial design students was to design and build something out of cardboard that would protect an egg inside from being dropped off of a roof. For a long time at Georgia Tech (and it may still be the case), one of the standard projects in the ID curriculum was the develop a device that enabled wheelchair users to pick up eggs off of the floor. It was an excellent project for a lot of reasons - learning empathy for the end user, hands-on mechanism exploration, understanding the importance of tolerances and allowances, and seeing first-hand that there are a million different ways to solve a problem.
I really like this idea! I teach ID at a college degree and I might ask my students to do this asignment.
