A rocking chair that looks more like a lounger and slowly rocks back and forth is the ideal place to relax. It is no coincidence that the sustainable Rocking Chair design by the Amsterdam design studio MVOS is located in a special relaxation room at the Rituals head office on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam.
Designer Mischa Vos – a graduate of the Design Academy in Eindhoven – has already created several designs for special chairs. The Rocking Chair is a modern version of the classic rocking chair with an original design language. The backrest is low and narrow, the seat is long and wide. The subtle base ensures a subtle movement, back and forth. Those who sit on the chair can dream away while rocking. To have the rocking chair made, Mischa Vos collaborated with various companies that work with sustainable parts. He put a lot of time and energy into this. “I am not only concerned with the design, but also with sustainability. I would like my chair to last for many generations in order to have as little impact on the environment as possible.'
For the production of the seating area, the designer has engaged CooLoo, developer and producer of ecological coatings for, among others, the furniture industry. A coating from CooLoo has been applied to the foam, which is made from recycled cork coating from old wine corks. The company Probend – which can bend and roll metal tubes into the most difficult shapes – has made the base of the Rocky Chair. An environmentally friendly powder coating has been applied to the pipes in a suitable color by the company MEJA bv.
Designer Vos considers it an honor that the first two copies of the Rocking Chair are at Rituals' head office. In the relaxation room there are also two standing lamps that he designed: the FLOOR, this lamp is always skewed because the tube continues under the foot. The light literally falls on your book. 'I hope that the employees and visitors of Rituals can dream away from time to time.'Interested parties can make an appointment to try out the rocking chair Rocking Chair. Companies or individuals interested in the rocking chair can opt for other upholstery, such as recycled jeans or leather or their own material.
