Dalt is a storage system for the ceiling. Nowadays many people live in small houses or rooms where space is a real problem. In order to solve this issue, I asked myself: how is it possible to create a feeling of space where there isn't any? Using a simple pulley system, the Dalt collection features a series of different storage devices that are easily accessible and each fit different user needs.

BACKGROUND
A table, a shelf or a clothes line are objects we all have in our homes, and all of them take up some of our living space. Architects and designers have created storage space beneath the floor or in the walls in order to convey a certain spaciousness in the home, but why not using the ceiling as storage since it usually is the same square footage as the floor?
After an early analysis, it seemed clear that this was the goal of my project: using the ceiling as storage space.
OPERATION
Dalt is operated using a pulley device in which various objects, each with a particular function, raise to the ceiling and provide more room in any given space.
The Dalt collection consists of a clothesline, a sack for dirty clothes, a round metal basket and another bigger rectangular basket; these objects are just a few examples showing the ceiling's storage potential.
MATERIALS
The pulley system is made from steel metal while the pulley and rope are made from plastic. For the baskets and the clothesline I used a variety of materials including steel, combined steel, and leather.
The pulley system on the ceiling was built using laser cutting in order to ensure perfect shapes and cuts so the pulleys would operate smoothly. The machines were formed and curved using machines and then welded.
This project has recently been awarded with the IKEA Stiftung Designpreis 2015. Dalt was made at the Burg Giebichenstein School of Art and Design in Halle, Germany.
