napkin review at Core77

Competition Summary
To celebrate the introduction of their new CATIA V5R14 package, featuring the Imagine & Shape module, Dassault Systèmes teamed up with Core77 to invite designers from around the world to explore form ideas that deal with one of life’s fundamental elements: Water.

Since CATIA can take any idea from initial brainstorm all the way through visualization, prototyping and manufacture, this competition started at the genesis of ideas, inviting participants to submit designs, literally, in the form of hand-drawn paper "napkin sketches".

We received over 750 napkin sketches from more than 65 countries. The sketches were incredibly diverse both in execution and content. In addition to the US$3500 Grand Prize Winner and three US$500 Runners Up Prize Winners, the judges granted a $500 “Special Prize” for an ambitious environmental concept.

For this competition, judges were looking for form designs where water was the central player. We received a broad range of entries, from water bottle, fishtank, and tea strainer, to beach radio, female pissoir, and flying water skiing apparatus. There were several abstract entries, as well as sketches that cleverly integrated napkin graphics into their designs.

We invite you to check out all the Winners and Notables above!
