Project Brief: MANTA lifeguard Rescue Device

MANTA is an upgraded lifeguard “Can.” The lifeguard Can is a tubular buoy made out of hard plastic and is designed to keep the person in distress afloat. While helping a drowning person, the lifeguard’s safety is threatened as the victim can harm the lifeguard during their state of panic. The objective of the MANTA device is to keep the victim afloat and help the lifeguard transport them to shore with the help of an electric powered water jet propulsion system integrated into the buoy. The system will help the lifeguard swim in order to conserve their energy. The MANTA is large enough to allow the rescuer to secure the victim to the top of the buoy, keeping them elevated out of the water, and transported to shore safely.

Gon: An Ergonomic Backpack

Back problems are on the rise around the world and there is no shortage of patients for practicing chiropractors. This means that our younger generations are at stake for developing poor posture. Everyday young students find themselves commuting to school and carrying their backpacks for long periods of time. Although it is not often considered, this action of carrying external weight shapes the muscles and bones in our body, potentially causing postural misalignment. By designing a backpack that focuses on stylizing features like the sternum strap and load lifter, Gon's goal is to persuade young people to embrace a better lifestyle by aiding their postural health.

About the Designer:

Patrick is an empathetic industrial designer with a love for creativity. Always curious, always listening, and always playing. He aspires to design products that better a user's life.
