After working with OMA in New York, MVRDV in Rotterdam, Cobe Architects in Copenhagen and Tpotek1in Berlin, the globe-trotting Danish architect and designer Sigurd Larsen founded a studio of his very own in Berlin just three years ago. Whether he's working on larger projects like retail spaces or his zero energy house in Copenhagen or on a smaller scale with his line of furniture, Larsen pairs a minimal aesthetic with designs that make the most of his materials' capabilities.
Looking through his portfolio it's immediately clear that there's one pair of materials he likes to work with the most: concrete and wood. At DMY Larsen showed The Form Couple, a concrete and wood table that gets the most mileage out of those materials by using one to form the other. The concrete slab for the table top is cast in a wooden form, which leaves the mark of the wood grain in the concrete. The wood is then taken apart and used for the table legs and matching chair.
Larsen explains "the design is a symbiosis of the negative and the positive, each part leaving an imprint on the other. The table and chair set makes use of all the materials involved in this process, leaving no waste. After being used to shape the concrete, the pre-cut pieces of timber are re-used to make the chair and the legs of the table. The structure of the rough wooden surfaces is visible in the concrete and the concrete leaves its light grey tone in the wood."
The Form Couple is available for 1,199€ (about $1,500).
