After their winning installation at last year's ICFF, design students from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago were invited to this year's Salone Satellite in Milan. 12 students and 3 faculty took part in a 7-month project called waterShed.
Deploying an assembly system of plastic petals, an aluminum frame, and contemporary technology, the project speculates on portability, transience, and exchange. The assembled installation enfolds visitors into a quiet environment of leaf-like, translucent modular units illuminated with dynamicallycontrolled clusters of LED lights.
Sensing and activation technology engages visitors in a two-way exchange. Data collected from local and foreign participants via sensors and transcoding software transforms the installation's environment. An exchange of souvenirs between the population of SaloneSatellite and the waterShed system is a tribute to the shared experience of place and time.
