Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you add other keys to the mix, they won't lie flat since the key blades are rotated 90 degrees; thus taking up more space than you're saving...
That is true, but when you think about hierarchy of keys it makes a lot of sense. This way counting on what you mentioned the most important key would stand out, and prevent the user from having to fumble through multiple similar keys until they found the right one. It is definitely not a design that should be used with every key on a keychain, but a house key makes a lot of sense.
