In the same vein as the Tron special effects guys, Tatiana Plakhova has created some rather stunning works of art centered around data visualization. Plakhova, a graduate of Moscow State University, owns the design studio Colour Atelier in Russia.

The images seem like the boundary where technology crosses over into fantasy and science into magic. They're not quite fractals, yet they are characterized by a similar kind of repetition and patterning. At first the data points appear as noise, but this noise is the origin of the patterns in the first place.

Beautiful indeed, but where's the data? What information does this convey, or is that not the intention? If this isn't meant to inform, then perhaps it should be called something other than "data visualization," which by definition attempts to inform. Perhaps "data art" is a more appropriate term for this.
@Stephen - Very true point. It'd be fantastic if the data points were some scientific or mathematical data, as it'd only enhance the beauty of the pieces, but perhaps that isn't the case. Any other examples of "data artists"?
