In this period of crisis, designing for the depression certainly seems to be taking its toll on many of us pencil-pushing-product-ers -- evident not only in the previous post, but also in this poster we ffffound online.

Soup Kitchens will save the world?? -Spoken like someone who's never volunteered at a soup kitchen:)
That image says exactly how I have been feeling about certain peers!
Ewoh; You think people like this would start a fundraiser or something.
What if I design for soup kitchens?
lol adam so true!
Soup kitchens don't pay the bills
once there was this soup kitchen
it had a logo for its name "Cityside Soup"
the logo had a drop shadow and beveled edges
no one would eat there
the homeless continued eating out of the dumpster
Ironically, someone designed this, no matter how simple it looks. Also, volunteering at soup kitchen won't save the world.
I am tired of my friends telling me this. I am sure that design ranks higher on the "saving the world" list than politics and cosmetology. On the other hand, after a long presentation about a product that can stop the spread of AIDS, filter water, slow global warming and, in the event of an emergency. serve as a flotation device, I would tend to agree.
Why are you all attacking his example of "soup kitchens" instead of defending design? Maybe because his point (the overhyped state of design, not the positive impact of soup kitchens) strikes a chord?
ART + DESIGN = IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY.
design is "the" thing that "will" save the world ..it is human consumption that may destroy it ...the ever expanding science of recycling and the use of biodegradeables is at the forefront of DESIGN.. bad language on the other hand (or visuals) will only feed the confusion of likewitted weakwilled bucketmouths...
Well you did design this image.
Now imagine, and this is far from impossible, that this image makes only one designer step out the door to help at a soup kitchen, or even just gets him a bad feeling so that he donates ten bucks via paypal.
In that case, design would just have changed the world for the better.
everyone needs to relax, do not take life and opinions seriously. Design has it place in the world and so does a soup kitchen, both just as important. Designers can save the world, and then go volunteer at a soup kitchen, not to save the world but just help those are in need.
How many designers can say that they have actually worked on a design that has had truly positive impact on society. I continue to hear peers talk about how Design should and is the catalyst for bringing about a utopia.... Most of these people sit in an ivory tower. Some firms and people do positive things for society through their design skills (one pc) most others like to jump on the band wagon. It is too bad that more talk about the topic then actively accomplish it.
The superficial and sophomoric arguements about how this poster was "designed" is completely missing the point. The moral is more important than calling the six seconds it took to put this in a Word doc "design." Don't set up a fundraiser to gather other people's money. Donate your own money! Soup kitchens don't need another wire wisk with an ergonomic handle. They need you! Go to work and pay the bills. Then volunteer at a soup kitchen! What we should be talking about here is that there is a serious disfunction in our thought process. We think that other people should donate, serve, or help. It's true that designers have big heads, don't deny it. Volunteer at a soup kitchen and you'll find that your small act of selfless kindness makes a difference for you and the person you serve. Biological change happens at the molecular level. Social change happens at the individual level. It's about coming down from your think-tank office and getting your hands dirty. The solution is simple. Save humanity and you'll save the world.
It's by Frank Chimero, who is a designer himself. So calm down, it's not a direct attack at designers and their apparent triviality. It's just an ironic "design".
I think everyone in this universe, even if you are for or against this point of view, has missed the point. I know this because as we type we are all sat down doing fuck all about it!
This is what he is talking about. Being a designer is a great career, but isn't key to human survival.
We sell stuff, thats what we do. We make things look pretty or say the right thing so we can help sell more of the product we have been charged with promoting.
As a post above points out it is our time and physical effort that it is needed.
