I love how good product photography and good industrial design can draw you to objects you previously had no interest in; it's part of why I'm currently obsessed with vintage sewing machines, and it takes all of my willpower not to post about them every day. But do have a look at these ridiculously beautiful bicycles, and snaps of them, by NYC-based Francesco Bertelli. (No word on who the shooter is, but if it's Bertelli himself, the man has been blessed with multiple talents.) Even more impressive, the bikes have been built with a combination of new and found parts.

For more related bikes and pictures have a look at cycleexif.com or also somewhat related try bikeexif.com which is motorcycle porn
So, does good design mean NO BRAKES? If it's not practical it's just art. That's all fine and good, but it's not good product design. Actually, looking back on your comment I can see you probably didn't intend to insinuate that this was good industrial design.
I'm glad to see some recognition for the beauty found in a well crafted bicycle. There is a lot of good stuff out there!!!
Jay, if you actually bothered to look at the website you'd see that some of the bikes are track bikes (hence no brake), some have a hand brake, and some (like the pictured bike with the wood bars) have a coaster brake (where you push backwards on the pedals).
jay: I would assume the bike has pedal brakes..
Jay & Peter: I think we're talking about a fixie.
All: I think he's talking about bike porn. Brakes are irrelevant.
The equivalent of brakes in porn would be condoms. You use them yourself but prefer not to see them clutter up the picture frame.
If it's the porn analogy were working with, then I'd rather look at pictures of something I'd actually want to ride ;) But hey, this is Core77... where functionality is thrown to the wind!
I don't really feel these bikes are that remarkable. Clean lines, richly colored leather saddle that looks well-crafted, chrome, solid white tires (that would quickly look dirty after any real amount of real-world riding), etc. I see these things on the street all the time. Not to say that they're bad looking, but I fail to see what makes them particularly unique?
Like actual porn, there are many different genres of bike porn.
IMO, single speed bikes without proper brakes are mostly for wankers (no pun intended).
This Bertelli bloke, he digs up a few interesting old parts, uses them to make bikes for wankers, and takes great photos to sell them. Prolly makes a killing too.
If, on the other hand, you have chain oil in your blood, you find such parts to be mere curios; historical footnotes which belong on the wall or on a wanker's bike.
And you know brakes can be damn sexy.
Kimmo, Jay, etc: Ride brakeless only if you can.
I do it with a fixie and I can assure you I can stop whenever I want. It takes some skill, but it's totally worth it.
Don't take with prejudice what you can't or don't want to understand!
Indeed, nice bikes.
Those are nice photos of not very special bikes. Nothing wrong with that but try looking at pics of bikes by Mark DiNucci or Jim Merz. Also, there are wonderful books by Jan Heine that show remarkable bikes from years past. As stated earlier, there is a lot out there. In the end, we ride what we ride and that always makes us smile.
