Aquaduct mobile filtration vehicle
Posted by Jeannie Choe | 17 Jan 2008  |  Comments (5)

Aquaduct utilizes the human ability to pedal, giving hope to those in the developing world who struggle to gather, transport, filter, and store clean drinking and cooking water. Aquaduct is the creation of Adam Mack, Brian Mason, John Lai, Paul Silberschatz, and Eleanor Morgan and was recently announced as the Grand Prize Winner of the Innovate or Die competition.

A peristaltic pump attached to the pedal crank draws water from a large tank, through a carbon filter, to a smaller clean tank. The clean tank is removable and closed for contamination-free home storage and use. A clutch engages and disengages the drive belt from the pedal crank, enabling the rider to filter the water while traveling or while stationary.

Specialized created "innovate or die" to get publicity for their green-washed bike line branded "Globe". They are arrogant enough to Market their bike as "green" - the exception- because it is not a car! Green marketing like this obscures the real issues in sustainability, such as material sourcing, labor practices, shipping, packaging, and eventual recycling. Companies like this are harmful to developing a sustainable culture if they are more interested in marketing than a truly green product.

Ebs, your so wrong... This is green marketing at its finest. Think about what the bikes remove from the streets... hmm.. how bout, cars! Many of these bikes are also targeted at helping third world countries.

Where can one purchase this amazing tool? How much does it cost? Is it possible to change it to filter more than two gallons? Perhaps design a stationary system for people who have wells and close sources of water, but no low impact method for purifying?

We need to get a petition for this, start sending them to governments and such. Is anything being done? I'd love to get involved

DavidNovember 5, 2008 10:34 AM

Can you send me some more information on this water filtration bike. We are missionaries in Africa. Some questions: what exactly does the filter remove from the water? What kind of a filter is it? What does it cost?
