Granted this has nothing to do with current-day industrial design, but this photo was too good for us not to post: It's GE's 1978 "Widescreen" TV and VCR combo. The thing is so large, ostentatious and outmoded we're sure Kim Jong Il still has one of these sitting around somewhere.
We also love how televisions used to come wrapped in fake wood; apparently the design conceit was that GE had somehow carved the thing out of walnut.

I love watching the progression of Televisions. First they were made from real wood and considered a piece of furniture. Then they turned to plastics but put a wood veneer on it. Then they decided to skip the veneer and keep it plastic making it an appliance. Flat screen televisions are now placed on the wall reflecting the characteristics of a painting... or maybe just part of the house. Where do you think they'll be in another 10 years?
