Much has been made in Robophilic blogs about how Japan will solve their greying population problem through the use of service robots. Autonomous buckets of tin, they said, would befriend, bathe, and feed the elderly.
Well, guess what? The elderly aren't so keen on the plan. "Most (elderly) people are not interested in robots. They see robots as overly-complicated and unpractical," says one social worker at the University of Tokyo. blah. they got bored talking to a "communication" robot. i would too. stuffed animals are probably more interesting to them than the nursing staff; that doesn't mean they don't hire nurses.
besides, the sad truth is the elderly generally get what is forced on them.
