Forego the plastic for Baggus

baggus.jpg

Those of us who heave grocer's delectables in our own bags know that it ain't easy being green, well, at the supermarket at least. It takes a mish-mash of awkward totes to hold all the ingredients for a week's worth of meals, and if you're a walker or biker, you better be ripped and have great balance...or a granny cart. It'd be easier to grab a Baggu or two in lieu of those cumbersome totes and the omnipresent crunchy-plastic sack. Baggus are are made from strong rip-stop nylon, weigh about 2 ounces and can hold up to 25 lbs of weight. They carry about two to three plastic grocery bags-worth of stuff and if used for one year, you'll have told 300 to 700 plastic bags to "talk to the hand Baggu." When empty, these carry-alls fold into a flat 5 by 5-inch pouch that you easily pop into a purse or pocket. And best of all, responsibility won't break the bank--grab one for $8, three for $22, or six for $38--and if you get the six pack, just remember that each bag holds two to three times more than the average bag!

A cheaper alternative is to buy one of the heavy plastic bags ($1.50 each) at Ikea the next time you go.

They are the blue ones, not the yellow.

They're pretty much indestructible and roughly the same size as the baggu.

or you can hop on over to www.greenfeet.com and get a chico bag for $5 US. I've got three chicos in superbright blue and pink and the looks you get in the market are great!

What an awesome invention. 25 lbs thats a lot of food per bag. I'm ordering some today.

This Baggu is very smart and stylish. I just pre-ordered a six pack so I can stash them all over ... two in my purse, two at work, and the rest in the glove box of my car!

Perhaps in the future we'll see these in the movies. For the last 60 years, movie characters always have big brown paper bags (with a french loaf and some carrot greens sticking out of the top -- just like in the baggus photo!) that they take out of the car and hoist onto the kitchen counter. Who gets brown paper bags anymore? It's as phony as those 555 phone numbers. Hey, props people! Start a trend!

ummm, I get paper bags.....

online shoppingJuly 30, 2008 2:40 AM

Here in my country you have to pay for any plastic or brown bags if you want from the shopping centre. Otherwise, the shopping centres also sell bags like the Baggus for a lot cheaper than the price above. Then you can just keep using those bags rather than having to buy plastic bags whenever you go there. It can be a bit expensive, eventually, buying those plastic bags. I think this idea is great for the environment.
