No stranger to Core77 readers, Scott Amron's latest proposal is Heatswell, a super thin stackable coffee cup with an insulating mid section that expands when you add hot liquid. The heat sensitive paper collar -- non-toxic, recyclable and biodegradable -- can swell up to 1 inch offering a delightful range of possibilities for 3D shapes, logos, and even creatures (although we're not sure how much control over the form there is). Check the video, it explains it best!

Those material science folks are amazing! I can think of many safety related applications for this technology...
Looks... pretty gross
First, they invent the paper cup. Then, they invent the insulation for the paper cup. They, they invent the self-raising insulation for the paper cup.
Why don't you just go with porcelain cups like all Cafes of Europe do? You'd be amazed how much more "dolce vita" your day will be once you sit down for a coffee break instead of have it to go.
Also, there is no trash with normal cups, and immense trash with paper cups (which are plastic-coated to make them watertight).
All in all, the "to go" solution ends with a high-stress lifestyle and loads of trash. I prefer the European solution.
this is stupid. takes much longer than putting a cardboard sleeve on the cup and is kinda frightening to boot. plus what the hell kind of chemicals go into that thing?
