This somewhat dark but highly interesting video by IDEO envisions a high-pollution future in which electricity has become 20 times more expensive than it is now, and that situation's effects on schoolchildren. It would surely make for a more fit population, and I'd willingly submit my own children to this system, but I'm sure it will have its decriers:

I sure hope they have some solutions for growing, distributing food in the future, if everyone's generating electricity manually. Energy consumption is energy consumption, no matter how you slice it, whether calories or kilowatts.
So children will be heart-breakers and thieves just to play with an electric stage built for plastic ponies. Kill us all now if IDEO thinks children will be gerbil slaves to electricity. How about a future of pencils and paper? Put the WACOM tablet down during those non-billable hours! Also, as if this post needs more, nice touch with the log battery.
Fun, but silly. The energy that goes into producing the calories we consume is greater than the incremental gained through human-powered energy generation. If it's exercise you were going to get anyway (i.e. in lieu of turning the calories into heat at the gym) then it's worthwhile; but humans as pedal-slaves is never going to make any sense.
Interesting article on a day when Bloom Energy announces impressive new fuel cell technology. IDEO losing touch?
Seems like the future, according to this video, makes the U.S. what we now know as a third world country. And one without any freedoms at that.
I want a spinning-wheel generator to go under my desk! no problem that it's ridiculously inefficient to generate power with human muscles - I just want an excuse to move and stretch while I'm typing!
