It's just a few weeks until start-up company Heimplanet is schedule to release their no-pole tent. How does the thing stand up without poles, you ask? Using air:

Definitely a wicked idea, with just one flaw I can see: The lighter weight and reduced bulk you'd have from not having to carry poles is offset by the fact that you'll need to bring...an air compressor. Or someone with really big lungs, like Placido Domingo.

Nemo Tents have been using air for their tents for years.
nice video. Nemo Equipment has been doing this for the last 8 years....been all over the place. Surprised it hasn't been covered here (not that I recall seeing). I do not work for them, but I give them mad props. www.nemoequipment.com
NEMO, one of the leading tent brands out there, has been doing this for awhile. They provide a foot pump that apparently works just fine. (http://www.nemoequipment.com/airsupported-technology)

Nemo did this a long time ago
Brilliant! As to the air compressor, bike pumps are about as bulky as poles.
Not a new idea. I'm actually curious if this infringes on any patents that NEMO tents may have. Cam, you should look into this.WTF!

Nemo has been making pole-less tents for a while now. a RISD Alum from the Industrial Design Graduates program, currently designing for Nemo, came to speak with us about the design of their tents.
She allowed me to pitch a small, one-person tent supported by an inflatable semi-circle and the mechanism to inflate it was fascinatingly innovative and simple.
Since the support beam needed to be inflated to a certain PSI one cannot maintain with only his or her lungs, I instead had to blow into a tube leading to a small bag on which, when inflated, I would put my weight. The weight of my body would force the air through another valve in the bag (not back up the hose into my face) and into the support beam. It took a few pumps and it was as strong as could be.
So the idea of an inflatable support structure for a tent is not a new one, but then again, what is these days? I do like how this particular tent has a geodesic fram as well. Nemo hasn't done that.
We had an inflatable tent over 20 years ago when i was a kid... and when we had it, it was at least 10 years old! i am not sure how this is a new idea!?
Nemo has been making these for years . . . www.nemoequipment.com
Just wanted to say that Nemo (www.nemoequipment.com) has been designing and producing air-supported tents since about 2002/03, although generally at a smaller size (1-2 person tents). Not to rain on the parade, but anyone interested in this concept should check out their stuff as well, as they've had several years to refine their air-supported system, and some other excellent outdoor innovations as well.
A compressor?
You need a compressor to PUMP something up?
In a world of good design, should not a good old-fashioned foot-pump be all you need? The kind that bicyclists use, where you stand upright and push/pull with your hands?
