Luggage concept - Form follows function: Frivolous?
Posted by hipstomp | 30 Sep 2008  |  Comments (7)

obag.jpg

In our eyes, designer Rooz Mousavi's Obag concept takes "form follows function" a bit too far. The circular shape is eye-catching and neat, but is it really any easier to roll through the concourse than a regular bag with wheels? Isn't there an awful lot of wasted space in a circular shape, particularly for an object that's meant to store things? Lastly, will the amount of space the bag takes up while stowed warrant the amount it actually holds?

What do you guys think?

nice find! i think you're questions relate more if you were considering to purchase this thing, or if you were going to manufacture it. the answers are of course no, yes, and no.
more appropriate questions might be: does this form make you reconsider your preconceptions of luggage or if i were to sit on this, how fast could i roll down the escalator?

thanks!

It would be immensely easier because
1) the little wheels break and you are left dragging a wheel-less bag for miles. Annoying I assure you.
2) You wheel the bag down more than concourses. With little wheels when you go off a curb it flipps on its back and tried to break you arm. Also, many hotels outside of the US have no elevators or bag carrying staff--this design looks like it would even go up stairs. You can also end up stranded for all sorts of reasons dragging a bag for miles and over rough terrain.

For the real heavy duty world traveler this would be a great design. Personally I just opt for a back pack but some people have health issues or heavy luggage and require a wheeling model.

where can i get those sweet pants?

EricSeptember 30, 2008 12:31 PM

It's got velocity deep V's... Hipster fixed gear luggage?

lorbusOctober 1, 2008 02:36 AM

This suitcase tries to reinvent the wheel... And misses.

On the other hand, if its a human powered washing machine, sign me up!

IvanOctober 17, 2008 11:35 AM

Emily AND B, you're both smoking the same blend as Rooz Mousavi. Same dealer?!

B, the pants are not sweet. It's the way they're worn. LOL! Seriously though, placement of the handle alone would make this extremely annoying to tug along.

Ever have your luggage hit the back of your leg or foot as you pulled it along? Well this is going to happen a lot with this wheel-chair looking luggage unless you pulled the handle so far out that it looks like OCC designed your bag.

Either way, highly frivolous. Does it challenge the way we look at luggage? I guess but even that's a weak argument for poor design. I reserve that for design that's too expensive to produce [in the present]. THAT challenges us to use different materials while at least giving us some inspiration...

Whenever something new comes to the world, it is very hard for regular people to accept it. Why most of us can't think out of box and keep doing things over and over again? There are people who want to have a unique product, and don't want to put 15 pants and 18 towels in their luggage. If you think this can't be your luggage, go and buy one of those square, boring luggage and put 120 underwear inside it.
