There's a huge market in the U.S. for anything that helps simplify life for the 20.8 million diabetics, and companies are stepping up with hot new devices.
Medical equipment is an oft neglected product group when it comes to stylization and marketable attributes. BusinessWeek has compiled a nice slide show that highlights devices for diabetics inspired by current consumer electronics trends. HealthPia Korea and LG Electronics developed an actual cellphone with a built-in glucose meter. Bang and Olufsen Medicom's C-Cap injection and reminder system is the same shape and size of a pen and uses visual and sound clues to ensure on-time dosing. While diabetes itself isn't what anyone would call "trendy", devices to treat and maintain it, including monitoring devices, glucose checkers, and insulin pumps, are receiving the revamp treatment, with components that directly reference pagers, flash drives, mp3 players, and PDAs.
