Now this is a stool that gets the hardware fanatic in us very excitable. Charlie Heyward and Peter Bingham from the Steneby school at the University of Gothenburg collaborated to make this giant nut-and-bolt stool—that we can confirm actually works! Peter kindly gave us a demonstration.

They cheated on the nut threads!
If they had acme threads inside the nut, then you could use the nut as the support and make the stool height adjustable. Now with just a couple of dowels to act as threads, it doesn't appear as versatile.

The dowels act as the inner thread, probably not as strong, but the bolt does goes up and down. It worked pretty well at the fair, but it has started to swell up due to moisture conditions back at the school. It still works dough. In the second pic you can se the stool all the way up resting on the nut.
They made it all at the school, and because we do not have access to CNC at the moment, they had to make it all in the lathe at the metal department. It is possible to make the tread in the bolt with a hand router, but it would take so much time, time that they did not have by the way, since they were sanding and oiling just a couple of minutes before we were on our way to the fair.
Oh, by the way, that is not Pete in the photos, that is Kacper.
