It's both wicked and simple, the kind of thing you can't believe no one's thought of before. Check out the Manifold Clock, by designers Shay Carmon and Ben Klinger (collectively known as Studio Ve). The two hands are connected by a piece of Tyvek, drawing a random-but-not-random 3D form that literally changes by the minute. It's best seen in video:

Dig it? They're for sale.

I may be wrong, but if you look at the bottom right image, once the minute hand has completed a full revolution, it looks as through the Tyvek will wrap around itself causing the whole thing to lock up. The video ambiguously does not show if this happens or not.
Yeah unless the hour hand is smart enough to do a full rotation and unwrap itself every time the minute hand laps it, this thing doesn't work.
I was looking at that too.
I think it will unwrap to the back and thus sort itself out.
Your right. Its good for an hour. Only use from 12 till 1 !!!
No you're wrong. It works. The arms are far enough apart that the material folds under then unfolds itself. Look at photo starting at bottom right, and then view images counter clockwise!
From vimeo webpage:
"the manifold is only connected to the hour hand. it wraps the minute hand, allowing it to flip and rotate every hour and five minutes."
The tyvek is not glued to the hands. It appears to have tube shaped pockets which slide over the hands which allows the material to rotate as the hands go around.
Call me crazy, but I'm actually thinking that if it didn't work, they wouldn't sell it. Sure my first thought was about the last 30mins on the clock, so the video could definitely be revised.
seems to be working just fine, check Studio Ve's flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/studiove/5245428343/in/set-72157625554779434/

everything is working just fine, and it doesn't wrap around itself..
thats the all beauty of it.. (:
u can see it on the designers flicker:

Before saying something stupid check out the other video's of this clock. It works!
No it will not lock up. because the minute hand is in front of the hour hand. try for yourself with piece of paper.
It would work though if the end of the fan was sewed to a tube and simply stuck onto the stick giving it flexibility to rotate. Then it could simply flip over.
Well, I ordered it because I'm a sucker for clocks. Here's a link to a vimeo of an full rotation. Added only 8 hours ago, so Studio VE probably wanted to answer your question :D.
Check it out at their Vimeo site

Does the material make any kind of sound as it unfolds itself? The videos show kind of a snapping, but they're really sped up, so...
It works because the fabric can rotate on the hands, allowing it to flip over to the other colored side every hour.
It's a really cool clock, but even the full rotation video has a jump-cut every time the clock reaches a full 360 rotation which leads me to believe there is a problem with the full rotation. I'm glad a few here have bough the clock and found no problems with it.
