The surge protector I've been dreaming of

I live in a rather dusty environment, and I tend to get worried when cleaning the fine layer of dust that accumulates on the power strips every month; I'm no Fire Marshal, but something tells me dust and electricity are not a good mix.

I just caught wind of Belkin's Conceal Surge Protector, which I'm tempted to run out and buy, despite the hefty $50 price tag. It seems to close up nicely and looks a damn sight better than the viper's nest under my desk. Now if only they'd lower the price....

I've had this surge protector for about a year now and I've got to say I'm a lot less enthusiastic now than when I bought it.

First it's beige, the pictures look like it's a neutral but it markedly beige. Second that viper nest isn't going anywhere. There is little to no room in it to put slack cables (if you look at their promotional photos yo use they just run them out).

If you do try to jam them in the detents on the door are so weak that it's constantly popping open. And the pin hinges that attach the door are pretty frail so if you do cram a bunch of cables in there you stand a good chance of breaking them. I know this from experience.

So all in all the surge protector is a good idea with poor execution.

I've been using this surge protector for over two years, when I impulsively bought it at Target. It's great for people like me who are completely OCD and hate looking at wires. Also, if you're using it for an under-desk situation, it allows you to actually put your feet on it without fear of turning off or unplugging things.

I give it an A+. Now if only Belkin would add a battery-backup unit in in the same style.

you can always use a box of some kind (lets recycle) to put your "vipers nest" in....

;)

I bought it and it helped but there is no room for cables/no cable management system - therefore it's only a part of the solution.
