A few people have sent this in, so here goes: Amsterdam-based architects Hofman Dujardin presents "Bloomframe", the hottest piece of blog-fodder since the ROLLERtoaster. Here's the pitch:
With one push on a button the balcony opens smoothly within 15 seconds. On the few square meters which are generated two persons can enjoy breakfast in the open air. Although the construction is extremely solid, the balcony looks elegant and transparent. During the development of the prototype safety had the highest priority. The upcoming months the development process continues...

I'm having a hard time figuring out why. I really can't see the benefit of this. Besides the coolness factor, I see this as more of a burden.
So, if I want any outdoor plants, I have to have my room constantly exposed to the elements? This idea is ridiculous. What exactly is the advantage over conventional balconies? It costs more and is significantly less useful.
ok...but why would you EVER put it in! This is a cool idea, but when you think about it, this space would always be best kept outside.
why would you want the balcony to extend in when not in use? how does this feature help us. Building in all the pneumatics for a pure gimmic.does this fall under design at all. not to mention you call it the hottest piece of blog fodder.
sexy concept......
I'm not sure I understand the benefit of this system. What are its advantages? Disadvantages?
This has to be the most pointless use of building material ever. Not only does it underthink the possibility of over-engineering, but I challenge to ask: In what way does anyone find this useful and/or convenient?
I think its great! A LOT less cleaning from the weather. Nobody i know sits on their balcony EVERY day, and excellent for when smoking friends come over for parties and such - pop out the balcony and they can smoke outside without leaving the festivities.
I could see the use of this in San Francisco when there are limited days when a balcony can be used. This would allow some extra space without having to keep the bird poop off it weekly.
Where or who can I contact to get one of these pop-out balcony? TIA
sick!!!
After having read a number of negative comments i have to say this is a solution to an architectural problem i had.
my client wanted a balcony to his new house. The simplest solution was a conventional balcony- however this would have broken the front facade i had in mind. I talk about proportions hear- very important to a good designer- not everyone is lucky enough to have a designer who would go a step further to get it just right.
having said this, i feel alot better.
the point for this is that when its raining u can just get rid of the balcony, instead of the balcony gettin all wet
