This one-day executive education workshop led by Matt Mayfield, assistant dean, academics at IIT Institute of Design will introduce frameworks and strategies for planning an innovation portfolio. Matt will address different levels of innovation and how those correspond with an organization's overall strategy. Participants should leave the day with a sense of how to begin to think about innovation in terms of a portfolio of offerings and how to begin to manage it. There will be a cocktail reception the evening prior to the workshop for participants to meet one another.
About Matt
Matt Mayfield has worked for over 20 years in applied research across the domains of design, consumer behavior, product and service strategy, and computing technology for fortune 500 companies. As a consultant, developer, and educator, he has identified and shaped compelling product and service opportunities in several industries including wireless communication, medical products, housewares, consumer electronics, fast food, and air travel. Through an emphasis on multidisciplinary insight, repeatable processes, and a bias towards action, Matt is passionate about making sense of market spaces and helping organizations envision and evaluate potential futures. Matt is currently assistant dean at the Illinois Institute of Technology Institute of Design. His courses include product and portfolio planning, contextual design research, and design processes. His long-term research interests revolve around understanding the impact of computing technologies on decision making for design and business. Matt continues to consult with companies and universities on navigating the complexities of today's markets to inform future product and service innovation.

bswing and IIT Institute of Design have joined forces to seed new practices and encourage cross-fertilization of ideas in the Twin Cities design and business communities. Starting in Fall 2015, faculty from ID will lead a series of executive education workshop and design-related experiences ranging from innovation portfolio planning for product managers to a community design challenge for urban community development.
