NYC is fortunate to have one of the best networks of public transportation in the nation. With new central business districts and residential neighborhoods growing and increasingly densifying parts of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, the already at capacity public transit system is stretched to the limit. The financial constraints on public funding and the often complex political climate that makes change difficult is imperiling much needed expansion of the current transportation networks. To better serve new projects in planning and even construction phases, several specific proposals for new transportation systems have recently been proposed that originate with private sector development. This panel will explore the opportunities, the specific proposals and the idea of public/private partnerships to expand our mobility choices.
