GROW is an exploration into discovering and implementing new manufacturing processes that take the full life cycle of a product into consideration. By tapping into a unique material science such as mushroom mycelium, we can begin to reimagine a more sustainable future. For the month of August, Danielle Trofe will host a live production, growing a hundred lampshades from mycelium for a custom lighting installation to be featured in the new 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. The exhibit, located in The Gallery at Industry City will be open to the public five days a week, sparking curiosity and providing a hands-on experience with the mushroom material, and growing process, with an aim to encourage us all to reimagine what our goods are made from, how they're made and where they will ultimately end up.
The MushLume lighting collection redefines what interior objects are made from and encourages a departure from conventional materials. All the lamps are GROWN, not manufactured, from mushrooms. Through a partnership withEcovative Design, we are able to grow lamp shades using their extensive mushroom mycelium research, tested technology and patented growing process. The process starts by taking a rapidly renewable resource, mycelium—the root structures of mushrooms—and combining it with a waste product from the agricultural industry—corn stalk—then, using only the power of nature, we are able to GROW a product that is fully biodegradable, adding nutrients back into the soil at the end of its life.
