A Material ConneXion Symposium
May 13, 2005
Tishman Auditorium
66 W. 12th St.
Malfatto: Imperfect Design for a Better World? This intriguing one-day symposium will explore a current cultural phenomenon: the movement, among consumers, away from the type of clean, supremely functional aesthetic that only industrialization could realize and towards unique, sensual objects that make explicit the human origins of their manufacture. Why is it that the world is being flooded with carbon copies of consumer icons, and how do we distinguish one device from another? Why are we faced with a maze of utilitarian objects that all look alike? What is the appeal of the hand-manipulated, unique object? These questions - as well as the relationship between experimental and "big business" design, and that between the developing and industrialized worlds in the context of design's globalization - are among those that the speakers will address in this lively and heated debate.

VINYL for [N] EVER
Party May 15, 7-10pm
Artsee
863 Washington St, NYC
4 years ago Les Marrons, an emerging design company directed by Frederique Thiollet and Nicolas Roseillier, came up with a collection of flower vases made of vinyl. After a successful launch, the collection found its way into many design stores around the USA and attracted the attention of the San Francisco MOMA. With the production already in progress, Les Marrons felt that marketing was taking away from the creative dynamic of the team and concentrated on other projects, letting the collection slide. Later on, with a stock left on their hands, they started to consider ways of recycling it, and it was then that they were faced with the facts about vinyl. But since the past cannot be undone, they have decided to donate these vases, and are asking for your cooperation by taking care of one of them for the years to come and let it be a reminder for responsible designing and consuming. With collaboration of sound composer Daniel Grabala.
