Here's some beautiful stuff from Horgan Becket, a Brooklyn-based design house that specializes in "spaces, places and useful objects."
Principals Gregory Horgan and Cayce Becket met while studying architecture at Pratt Institute. After graduating, the duo opened up shop in Brooklyn, and are unusual in that they don't just do the design, but the design-build. "Doing the design-build basically eliminates that coordination phase that exists between designing a solution and actually implementing it," explains Horgan. "What you usually have is two separate industries, one designing the thing and the other building it, with blueprints and phone calls and e-mails going back and forth between them. By eliminating that step we can put more effort into designing and building [as opposed to coordinating] and can keep the process tighter."
"We focus primarily on local," Horgan adds. "By dealing with the difficult, spatially-challenging types of spaces we have here in New York, we're able to learn a lot during the process."
In their combination design studio and production facility, on any given day Horgan and Becket may not only be hunched over sketches or peering into computer screens, but strapping on welding helmets, working plasma cutters, running wood through the table saw, or going up and down ladders to hang mock-ups from the ceiling. "At the end of the day," Horgan says, "[Cayce and I] are always looking at each other like 'We had a crazy day.'"
