How often you do just throw something away? As conscious as we all are of opportunities to recycle, reuse and repurpose every day objects, some things simply reach the end of their useful lives and are tossed into the trash. This leads to an absurd amount of waste that could potentially be avoided if we examined the original designs of these objects.
Along with USM Modular Furniture and Visual Magnetics, Core77 is proud to sponsor an initiative that is tackling this exact challenge: the 5th Annual WantedDesign Workshop. Each year, WantedDesign invites students from all over the globe to collaborate on efforts that promote their work and their schools, all while strengthening their network of international, young designers. This year, the WantedDesign Design Schools Workshop asks students to think about the lives of objects they design and base their work on the idea that what they make will last forever.
This challenge has been posed to students hailing from Centro (Mexico), Art Center College for Design, Pasadena, Savannah College of Art and Design, plus two more schools yet to be announced. At the end of four days of ideation, development, prototyping and finalization at WantedDesign in Industry City, Brooklyn, the Workshop culminates with a judging panel, which includes our very own Editor-at-Large Allan Chochinov, Chair, SVA|NYC MFA Products of Design.
Since all this is part of the city wide 2015 NYCxDESIGN, everyone is welcome to observe the students bringing their ideas to life between May 14th and May 17th at Industry City, as well as the final public presentation of the projects to the jury committee on May 18th at the Conversation Lounge at WantedDesign in Manhattan.
Mark your calendars and watch for more updates here and on the WantedDesign Twitter and Facebook feeds.
