Lilla embraces the coziness of a small home by utilizing space efficiently with minimal and multifunctional pieces that are easy to use and light to handle. Its thoughtful design not only keeps the users' needs for adaptability in mind but also the needs of the environment by using sustainable and recyclable materials. Each piece is made from a combination of maple wood, marino wool felt and aluminum.
The name Lilla comes from the Swedish word "little" and it was a very little apartment that inspired this project. My sister is a designer living in New York City so consequently her apartment is tiny. She needed space saving furniture but most things on the market were not very aesthetically pleasing.
I wanted to create furniture for small homes like hers that was functional as well as beautiful; the result was Lilla. Each furniture piece in the Lilla collection was thoughtfully designed to look beautiful and save space in unique ways.
Storage and seating are both incredibly scarce in small homes. The stool from the Lilla collection solves this issue by providing plush seating that doubles as two different storage units. To save space, the felt stool sits in a wire basket, which can be separated and used as a bin or flipped over and used as a side table. The stool's plush top can be twisted off and has additional storage inside.
Shelving can be problematic in a small home because of the lack of floor and wall space. The LILLA shelf is a versatile shelving unit that is suspended from the ceiling. The shelves slide into the mounted pole and are adjustable in size and placement. The mounting system adjusts to any ceiling height, which allows them to be placed almost anywhere.
For many small homes the dining table is also used as a workspace. The Lilla table is helpful in creating a dynamic fusion between a dining table and desk. To utilize the volume taken up by a normal table efficiently, the Lilla table has storage space for both kitchenware and office supplies. The tabletop is conveniently split in two for ease when storing or retrieving items. The inside has deep felt pockets to keep items organized and in place. The table is paired with a bench, which conveniently sits two and is easily tucked away under the table. The maple wood bench has a felt cushion that is kept in place by a cotton bandage.
Lilla is evidence that through thoughtful design, furniture can be aesthetically pleasing, functional and make a small space feel like a home.
