The Trailerduck: A Self-Powered, Auto-Following Bike Trailer
I have another use for this type of vehicle: a SAG Wagon (Support and Gear) for the Touring Cyclists! I had envisioned something 28 inches or 700 centimeters wide, to carry spare wheels and tires sideways. It would be good to have a small refrigerator, stove, and water supply on board for those transcontinental rides (or even just to traverse a state or province).
It has potential, but having pulled some heavy trailers, I would say that braking is much harder than moving a big load. If you remove the physical connection to the bike, you'll need some very good stopping power to avoid plowing into the rider if they stop quickly. I can also imagine some gotchas where the lidar spots a possible collision and stops the trailer while the rider dodges around it and doesn't even know the trailer isn't still following (though a the trailer could honk, or ping your phone, etc.)
Brilliant! This looks like the future. Make it affordable, make them available for rent -- this strikes me as just what the city-dweller, eco-conscious bike rider needs.
