As DIY projects go, building a portable firepit sounds complicated and maybe even dangerous; but as Karen Bertelson, Canadian TV host and founder of The Art of Doing Stuff demonstrates, it's not only safe and relatively easy, but inexpensive.
Inveterate DIY'er Bertelson, working off of a design by her sister, used a cheap metal planter, panes of glass from inexpensive diploma holders, a canister of gel fuel, rocks, metal mesh, and silicone for a total cost of $25. In addition to the cost we were also impressed by the ad hoc way she put the thing together, eschewing fancy clamps and the like. Check out the full tutorial here.
