A myriad of design topics have been covered in the past two panel discussions Ford and IDSA have hosted, from the effect of video games on players to the intricacies of automotive design. (If you missed them the first time around, you can watch them here and here.) This time, we have four solid panelists ready to take on the customer experience and how designers can create meaningful interactions between their products and the consumer, among many other areas of interest, of course. Eric Anderson of Carnegie Mellon's Integrated Innovation Institute will be moderating the conversation among Charles Austen Angell, Founder of Modern Edge; Ed Boyd, VP of Experience Design at Dell; and Kevin George, Exterior Design Manager at Ford Motor Company (read our recent Q&A with him here).

Anderson teaches undergraduate studio courses in Design and masters courses for the Institute including co-teaching the Integrated Product Development (IPD) capstone course in the Masters of Integrated Innovation for Product and Services (MII-PS) program. Anderson is also a Chairman-Emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). Anderson's research interests focuses on integrated product development and particularly on how teams use visual thinking and representation to shape, exchange and advance ideas. He describes the goal of his work as developing visual intelligence, which he defines as the ability to reason with complex information using varied tools (manual and digital drawing and modeling) and methods to shape mental and external visual experiences—a departure from traditional linear approaches to visual education.

As President and CEO, Angell oversees all Modern Edge projects, from client contact through human factors research, design refinement, product and program management, market positioning, and customer experience. He maintains a special focus on the role of culture, politics and geography in shaping human needs, and meeting those needs with responsive product design. He is passionate about designing products that transcend cultural boundaries to enhance the shared human experience. Angell's published works include articles in Innovation magazine and other journals of design. He has also been a guest lecturer at Purdue University, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, the University of Southern Illinois-Carbondale and the University of Minnesota, and has he taught an online master's level class in sustainable product development for Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
» Panelist: Ed Boyd Dell // VP of Experience Design Group
Boyd is responsible for Industrial Design, User Experience and Visual Identity across all consumer products. Ed's strategic vision is helping Dell define and execute specific branding and personalization on a wide array of products and experiences. Before joining Dell, Ed served as Global Creative Director for Nike's Athletic Training Division. There his primary focus was vision and strategic design direction for Nike's athletic training businesses, encompassing the total consumer experience (product, services, events, and retail). Ed had more than ten years' tenure at Nike where he developed extensive experience in understanding consumer needs and desires and translating these insights into rich and meaningful experiences. Before Nike, Ed worked as a Senior Designer for Sony for five years where he worked on numerous product categories—home audio and video, telecommunications, television, professional mass storage, and in-flight entertainment.
George started his career designing themed environments, where he helped create amusement parks and other commercial spaces that required imaginative landscapes. From there, he moved on to toy design, creating vehicles for classic action figures. In both roles, George enjoyed sketching vehicles, and he put together a portfolio to one day work on real cars. When the toy company he worked for decided to relocate, George took a chance and applied at Ford. Soon after, he was hired and assigned to the Mustang interior design team. After working on vehicle interiors, George moved to exterior design, and from there joined the team for advanced design tasked with bringing the European-designed Ford Fiesta to North America. More recently, George worked on the Ford Edge. As exterior design manager, he oversaw the design team working from early sketches to the concept vehicle that was revealed at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show and to the final vehicle that was just revealed this June.
