Plastic might have been known as the 'Nylon stockings material' in the 20s, but today's product world shows that plastic is not one, but many materials. Plastic has lots of associations; some people consider plastic as a cheap alternative to the real thing, while designers often employ plastic as the only possible material to realize their wildest dreams.
Plastics are this year's favored material as a part of the Materialenreeks--a yearly materials exhibition series at the Delft University of Technology. This March features one month of lectures, exhibitions and workshops on plastics.
The materials series are being organized by the Studium Generale, an organization present at all Dutch universities set up to increase and broaden the general knowledge of students and employees. Since 1998, they have been featuring wood (2004), glass (2002), rubber (2001), smart textiles (2000), foldables (1999) and bamboo (1998).
