We attended the Dwell on Design Conference in San Francisco's Concourse Exhibition Hall - an old railway terminal converted into exhibit space. The first session this morning was on Prefab housing - Inhabitat has an excellent indepth write up - and in the afternoon, the topic was Affordability in the City. Architect David Baker's work on High Density housing for not-for-profit developers was the outstanding presentation of the day - we hope to interview with him tomorrow. SFChronicle's design critic and Pulitzer prize winning writer, John King, said during his talk that some of San Francisco's best architecture could be found in the low income areas of the Tenderloin district and SoMa through the efforts of those such as Mr. Baker. The day's presentations ended with a sonnet read by Dolores Hayden, professor at Yale University's American Studies Program.
Note must be made of Design Within Reach's silent auction of furniture including that lovely handpainted chair you see above. There were also cork tables and a very large moose head.
Meanwhile, we carefully analyzed the impressive 'shwag bag' from Timbuk2 - impressive because there was NO logofication of the bag, detailed pictures after the jump of some of the eyecatching products handed out to attendees.
